May 25 & 26 - ‘Creators, Makers and Innovators’ is the theme of this year’s event, featuring many older buildings that have been redesigned, re-invented and re-purposed into modern 21st-century spaces that host collaborative teams of imaginative people who are creating new ways of thinking, making and doing.
Always a highlight for visitors, Commerce Court will open its doors to our iconic North Building banking hall. Modeled after the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, the stunning architecture elicits an almost ecclesiastical sense of awe – and lots of picture taking!
Doors Open Toronto is an excellent opportunity to get to know your city better with nearly 150 architecturally, historically, culturally and socially significant buildings on the tour. If you plan to go, refine your route by visiting the website first: toronto.ca/doorsopen/2013/ and consider conserving energy – yours and the environment’s – by taking the TTC!
May 22 - This year, the United Nations International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) focuses on water – essential for all living things. Created in 1993 for the promotion of biodiversity issues, past IBD themes have included climate change, agriculture and the forest. On May 22, we raise a glass – of water – to toast this UN sanctioned initiative to increase understanding, awareness and positive action surrounding biodiversity issues.
Following April’s focus on Earth Week, it’s encouraging to see the real impact of our eco-conscious efforts at Commerce Court. Consider this impressive year-to-date statistic on resources saved at our complex: our diversion rate is 78.9% - with an increase of 2% from the same time last year! Together, we are making a measurable difference in protecting our planet.
